What is Dental Fluorosis?
Dental fluorosis is a cosmetic condition that can occur if teeth get too much fluoride while their teeth are still developing (mostly before age 8). The important thing to know is that fluorosis affects appearance only. It doesn’t cause pain, cavities, or functional problems.
What does it look like?
- Mild cases: Faint white flecks or streaks (often only noticed by a dentist).
- Moderate cases: More visible white patches or discolouration.
- Severe cases: Pitting and brown stains (very rare).
It is not a contagious condition and does not develop further once the teeth are fully formed. Mild cases can even be managed with teeth whitening services.
Fluorosis is also rare in Australia thanks to strict regulation of fluoride in drinking water. Severe cases are extremely uncommon and usually occur only in areas with unregulated fluoride sources.

💡 Tip: Using a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste is far more effective than brushing with a large amount of non-fluoridated toothpaste. Even a small amount gives your teeth the protection they need.
